Omaha, NE

I was extremely impressed with the quality of your performance.  You clearly displayed the ability to be suitably "tender" and "soft" when the occasion merited, as well as fully ready to shatter the building with flourishes and the full organ when appropriate, which I think separates the truly accomplished, master organist.  As we know, talent exits all over, but I thought your performance was world-class, supported of course by this world-class organ (and building!) [St. Cecilia Cathedral] we are so blessed to have here in Omaha.  Thank you for it, and I am still frequently re-living parts of it.

Omaha, NE

Brava, Brava, Bravissima!  It was fantastic!

Omaha, NE

Thank you so very much for the afternoon of exquisite playing and artistry!!! ... The program, your playing, the organ, the Cathedral ... it was all such a gift to each of us!!  Thank you!!

Kansas City, MO

Thank you Jan for the wonderful Happy Hour program.  It truly was nice to hear your excellent music making on piano, and with a very pleasing choice of repertoire.

Kansas City, MO

In this case, a superb organist is also a superb pianist (not always the case).

Independence, MO

It is always such a joy to hear you play.  Super Bowl Sunday was yet another time in heaven.

This time I was struck by how you love to teach before you play.  Your "Intersections" were fascinating, each one logical, yet each one having an unexpected twist only you would/could find and develop.  And talk about having the audience in the palm of your hand -- wow!  People were hardly breathing.

Pure joy -- pure music -- pure fascination.  Another time to cherish.

Independence, MO

You made Super Bowl Sunday special for so many.  Your technique and love of the art transcends the music itself.

Independence, MO

Excellent organ concert.  Thank you.  I love organ music but am rarely "moved" by it.  Your artistry "moved" me at times.  I grew up listening to the Auditorium Organ in person and on the radio, so I appreciate hearing it played well and your comments about John Oetz.  He is proud of his protégé.

Independence, MO

Yesterday's concert [Ancora Chorale, Bernstein Chichester Psalms] moved me to tears several times. It was marvelous, spectacular. ... Your organ accompaniment was perfect. Perfect.

Kansas City

We truly enjoyed the concert. ... we truly had a great time and hope you will come to the [theatre] organ again in the future.

Kansas City

It’s always a pleasure to hear you perform, but yesterday at the Music Hall was really special.

You exhibited so much color in that instrument that everyone loved it. Your articulation was so clean that I think you made that organ sound more beautiful than the builder ever expected.

It was a very-interesting and well-planned program that was very beautifully played. I hope to hear you there again!

Manhattan, KS

Thanks for such a lovely recital. ... Your programming was such a great idea and made for very interesting listening and enriched by the stories you offered in the comments. ... I enjoyed your playing of everything - so clean, secure and committed. ... It is always a pleasure to hear you play and speak!  Thanks for sharing so generously.

Kansas City, MO

Thank you so much for allowing us a glimpse into the inner workings of the Julia Kauffman pipe organ.  Organs have always been a fascination for me and to be able to see some of the internal workings of the organ was a real treat.  Jan's recital showing us the breadth of capability of the organ was eye-opening.  I also appreciated Jan's expertise in answering my multitude of questions about it's technical workings.  The video on the construction and installation had me riveted. ... I hope others will be able to share the experience down the road.

Independence, MO

Thanks for your beautiful music today.  [My friend] said, "I always know that when Jan plays it will be very special and outstanding.  She is so talented and makes the music come alive!"  Thanks for your smile and friendliness.  You make the music fun and enjoyable and make the whole atmosphere inviting!!

Kansas City

I wanted to drop you a note to let you know how much we enjoyed the presentation on the Julia Irene Kauffman Casavant Organ yesterday afternoon.  The film did a good job of trying to explain the complexities of constructing a large pipe organ.  I enjoyed your playing and selection of songs.  We brought our daughter and 10 year old grandson and he was mesmerized with the film and the music.  Jonathan couldn’t get over the fact that you had all those keyboards and when I explained that the pedals amounted to another keyboard played with the feet it blew his mind.

Rochester, MN

My wife, my mother-in-law and I were lucky enough to hear Jan play at St. John's church here in Rochester, MN.  It was a pleasure to hear such beautiful music played by someone so talented.  Jan's mastery of the organ is just amazing.  I hope she can make it back to Rochester again.

Kansas City, MO

I just want to tell you how very much I enjoyed your portion yesterday of the 2nd Annual French Organ Music Festival, especially the Duruflé.  I don't recall a time when I've heard you play with such passion, precision, energy, and musical splendor, and your playing was one of the two highlights of the entire festival for me.

Dr. Prince-Joseph used to tell me that music by French composers tends to inspire even the best.  That was certainly evident many times yesterday, but the Duruflé you played was just extraordinarily above and beyond.  THANK YOU!!!

Kansas City, MO

I loved the French Festival today.  The last piece you played – Magnificent!

Thank you for being in our chapter!

Kansas City, MO

Thank you so much for the wonderful concert on Sunday.  I loved the variety and your performance.

Kansas City, MO

You performance yesterday at the Kauffman was wonderful.  You are amazing and inspiring.

Kansas City, MO

I know that yesterday's program presented many challenges ... but you certainly met them with great success. The program was splendid, as was your playing. ... Enjoy the accomplishments of yesterday, including introducing many first time listeners to the new Casavant ....

Kansas City, MO

I didn't get to see you after the concert today, so I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed it. It was fabulous!! What a great way to commemorate an important anniversary [the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I]! About a dozen or so folks from [my] congregation got tickets together, including 5 kids, ages 4-13 (Yeah!!!!) and several ladies in their 80's, all of whom raved about it. The programming was awesome, certainly something for everyone. ... I loved the piece by Blanche Gangwere. What a thrill it must have been for her to be able to be there! ... And I really like Alain's "Joies." My feet were tired when it was over, just from watching you! Singing (and listening to everyone singing) Silent Night was very moving, especially when Bryan Pinkall sang the German for the last verse. ... Thank you so much for this event and every musical moment you so graciously provide.

Kansas City, MO

WOW!!!

Congratulations on a sparkling performance this afternoon!

The opening piece with the percussion and brass was spectacular.  Bringing in Bryan to do the sing-a-long was brilliant.  That’s the first time I heard him solo that I know of.  OMG, what a voice!

The audience really got into the sing-a-long.  You had the crowd smiling, singing and occasionally, teary-eyed.   You can’t beat that range of emotions.  Great comments from the audience, even after all that applause.

Kansas City, MO

Once again, thanks for the concert yesterday.  It was so poignant and relevant.  You are so creative...keep it up.

Kansas City, MO

[My son] thinks you are the bomb. In a short time you have had a big influence on him.  Your passion for excellence in music, especially classical music, and your encouragement ... when someone who has reached a pinnacle as you have offers encouraging words, it helps to keep the student motivated and daring to dream.  So, thank you.

Indianapolis, IN

Your concert this late afternoon was most uplifting!  It was great to have you in our midst at one of the oldest churches in Indiana (the downtown Episcopal church, namely: Christ Church Cathedral).   It was a beautiful setting, and a wonderful treat to have you demonstrate on both of the church's organs found there in mid-town (Circle City) Indianapolis.

Kansas City, MO

Your playing at Bachathon was such a thrilling way to end of the evening!! Brava!

Kansas City, MO

Jan, as always, was super-wonderful.  I think she should be in for a good  vacation after this weekend.  We saw her Saturday night at Rhapsody, and again Sunday afternoon with the KC Symphony Chorus and then saw this in the paper that she was scheduled to perform that evening at the Bachathon at Grace and Holy Trinity.

audience member

Your performance was truly a sacred, "mountain-top" experience.  I have heard a number of fine organists in my long lifetime and you top them all!  In addition to your amazing gift of music, you are a beautiful, delightful person.

St. Joseph, MO

What a WONDERFUL program yesterday!  We enjoyed it so much. ... Like Jack Benny, you can say – “They love me in St. Joe!”

Independence, MO

I just sat there stunned for a few minutes at all the great music I'd experienced ... Congratulations on a superb performance that used the organ, room,  the slides, humor and so much more so well.   I thoroughly enjoyed the program especially the Olympic piece,  that was just incredible music and visuals.  For 15 years we have had the good fortune of your artistry and graciousness, how lucky I am to be a part of it all.

Independence, MO

Congratulations on a fabulous recital! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the Super Bowl Sunday Recital. ... Not only are you a consummate artist; but you are also warm, gracious, and creative--a winning combination, to be sure!

I enjoyed watching the ease with which your fingers and feet can glide over the keys, and amazed at the physical prowess you demonstrated to play the famous four-manual Auditorium organ. The pieces you selected showcased your technique and emotional sensitivity. Combining both video and musical art forms to present A Tribute to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics was extremely effective. I was moved and inspired by your performance Sunday. Thank you so much!

Independence, MO

Once again, you did just a superb job with the Super Bowl Sunday recital, and it looked to be again a great turnout for the event! Your opening reminded me of the start of the program that inaugurated the Auditorium organ so many years ago, and which you repeated a few years back. The trumpets sounding out from the back of the room – it was just glorious. The organ, in general, sounded even better on Sunday than it did when Christopher Houlihan played it back in November. My guess is that you are so familiar with the instrument that you know the best combinations and registrations for the ultimate sound – it was wonderful! ... The AV presentation was great, you work with a very talented crew, and we are grateful that you can share their work with us.  ...  Thanks so much for the amazing program on Sunday. I will have to go and check out your schedule to know what other fun places you get to go to next and who else will get the chance to hear you perform!

Kansas City, MO

"It was my great pleasure to meet Jan Kraybill.  Her opening presentation was superb."

"Could not have been surpassed! Thank you."

"The keynote was so inspiring it brought tears on."

Tucson, AZ

Your recital on Sunday was absolutely marvelous! Everything was perfect from the start with your beautifully conceived theme, delightful programming, superb performances, engaging commentary all tied up with your charming and effervescent personality. Your love for the instrument and your passion for what you do was clearly evident throughout the afternoon.

Kansas City, MO

What a wonderful life you live, playing music so competently, beautifully, and graciously!

Kansas City, MO

Hearing @jankraybill playing the organ at #helzberghall with the @kcsymphony is the highlight of my month. #beautiful #aweinspiring

Kansas City, MO

Just got home from the Symphony and wanted you to know how much we enjoyed it!  Thanks.

Kansas City, MO

The Faure' [Requiem, with Kansas City Symphony and Symphony Chorus] last night was absolutely glorious. And the organ part was just right. ... The organ's strings last night were also very welcome, balance was just right throughout.

Kansas City, MO

Watching your face as you play was one of the most amazing sights in the world.  I could see someone who truly loves every minute of what they are doing.  ...  It was truly a magical experience, which I cannot thank you enough for.

Kansas City, MO

We loved the concert last night. ... And it was a pleasure to hear the organ's contribution to the work. It really made a difference. From where we were sitting the balance seemed perfect, as well as coordination.

Kansas City, MO

Thank you for your participation in the KC Symphony performance of the Strauss Alpine Symphony.  The overall effect of that ... was absolutely breathtaking.

Kansas City, MO

When we read that you were to be at the Kauffman with a choir, we immediately bought tickets, invited friends, and had marvelous center seats in the first balcony. We could watch your amazing performance so clearly.  It was as though we were at a choral/organ/ballet performance last night. You keep breaking our hearts open with the power of your gifts. ... All the way home last night we raved. [Our guests], too, were astonished.

Kansas City, MO

Jan's performance was magnificent. On her organ solo she reminded me of a ballet dancer who was simply music itself.

Independence, MO

I love to hear you play, you are the music no matter what the tune.  You immerse yourself in it and make it sing and soar, the organs never sounded so good!

Kansas City, MO

I thought you played magnificently!   I loved your registrations and how viscerally exciting every note was.  It was a beautifully articulate performance and it was a joy to hear you. I hope I get to again at some point soon.  BRAVA!

Independence, MO

... I just want to express how much I (and my family) enjoyed the Hymn Fest Worship during World Conference.  I don't believe I have ever been so moved in a service before.  I have tried to explain it to others and I have difficulty finding words powerful enough to describe that worship.

I have always felt the power of music and it awed me that I could be so moved when Jan Kraybill was playing and then be just as moved when she stopped playing and just our voices were carrying the ministry. ...

Kansas City, MO

I wanted to let you know that your concert at Helzberg was fantastic! I was on that level of seats (lower grand tier) that is about at the same level as the organ and I was only 3 seats back from the front of the hall. So I had a great view of all you were doing.

Independence, MO

... Been meaning to tell you that my aunt and uncle ... came to your Super Bowl Sunday concert and LOVED it! (I had whetted their appetite by telling them they'd be in for a treat at the beginning).

Independence, MO

Congratulations on the compositions selected for your Super Bowl Recital Duals and Duets.  Your creativity will continue to increase the audience for the pipe organ.

Lamoni, IA

It was another fine recital that you gave and I was really glad to be able to hear that organ. ...

The program was a really good mix, there were enough lighter pieces to balance the more serious organ literature.

Your comments always give me another new insight into the music. I focused more this time on the emotional range in the Durufle’ piece, and during the Guilmant Caprice I felt transported to a warm, sunny day at the St. Louis Exhibition.

I really enjoy your transcription and interpretation of the Brubeck piece, and the playing of the Durufle’ and Jongen pieces seemed quite masterful.

Independence, MO

I was among the many who thoroughly enjoyed your Super Bowl concert last Sunday.  The opener was exceedingly clever, and well done!  It was thrilling to hear both organs at the same time and done to the dueling banjos song.  ...

All of your music was terrific, but the first piece was the most fun.  I've played both organs and enjoy the power of the Auditorium organ at full tilt the most.

Allan was a lot of fun on the Typewriter piece.  A great way to involve your spouse!

I liked the projection system onto the wall.  You have great form!

And you can really play!  Thanks bringing such joy to organ music and performance!

Independence, MO

Your playing relaxed all the tense spots, massaged them with your always elegant finger- and pedal-work.  Thank you, those who handled the cameras -- huzzahs for doing it musically!)  And your poised comments were more music for me.  The Durufle' [Suite] was utter heaven. ... Thank you, Jan, for another memorable concert.

KC metro area

I have just had the privilege of hearing your last two concerts, one at Kauffman and the other at the Temple.

I was blown away by both of them and hope to hear you often now that we have found you.

Springfield, MO

Once again, I really enjoyed a recital you gave, great job! My mom was in awe of the performance, and [her friend] told her on their way home that he had really enjoyed your performance. And that means something as he would have told her in private exactly what he thought. He is not as much of a classical music or organ enthusiast as my mom is, so that is a great endorsement!

Springfield, MO

One thing I really enjoy about your performances -- all of the information you share with the audience during the recital. I know there is much debate amongst performers about whether or not a performer should try to communicate verbally with the audience. I’ve heard it said that the music should need to be the only communication needed. So, OK, that is one opinion. I get it that some people aren’t comfortable talking to a group. But I really enjoy that connection and the chance to gain some perspective from the performer related to the music. ... Your approach is just right!

Springfield, MO

Congratulations again for your wonderful concert at First and Calvary Presbyterian in Springfield.  You played musically and with great energy and intensity which engaged the audience fully in the music.

Kansas City, MO

I do think that you do an amazing job making music, and promoting it and the organ and the arts in general -- you are a real inspiration! And now you are giving four separate, individual organ recitals in the span of a month -- wow! You make it seem easy, but I know it isn't!

Independence, MO

I often read about the need to expand organ recital audiences beyond the usual group of organ enthusiasts, organists and Guild members. IMHO Jan Kraybill is doing a really nice job with this, especially with her Annual Super Bowl Sunday recital series. ... This program appears to include classic literature, it will incorporate some unique techniques, and it definitely has the potential of exposing the pipe organ and its music to a wider audience in a fun and interesting manner. This series has already been quite successful by drawing hundreds of people to each of the past performances, and Jan easily engages the audience with her winning personality.

Kansas City, MO

All selections were excellent. ... Your phrasing and expression in the Barber was exquisite. ... Thank you again for your great program on the Helzberg Hall instrument.

Kansas City, MO

Magnificent sonorities ... magnificent program ... magnificent performance!

Kansas City, MO

I would like to say how much I ENJOYED the organ recital Wednesday night.  The conversations part was so informative (thought it would be boring), fun, and a wonderful learning experience!!!!  Dr. Kraybill was fantastic both her conversations part and especially the recital!!!  A friend of mine said "she wrestled the beast to the ground."  She played with so much passion and feeling!  That pipe organ will never be the same!!  I enjoyed it so much!!

Kansas City, MO

Lady, you sure make beautiful music!  I was at your recital last Wednesday night and I thought it a magnificent performance.  It was the first organ music that I have heard for some time.  I felt that it was such a privilege to hear that grand organ played by you.  You are a real master.

Kansas City, MO

Tonight we heard your concert in Helzberg Hall.  Fantastic!!!!  My wife and I have become two of your biggest fans. ... Thank you contributing to make music a most important part of my life.

Kansas City, MO

YOUR CONCERT WAS FABULOUS! ... Congratulations on the huge impact you are having on the artistic life of our city.

Kansas City, MO

Your interview with Michael Barone was charming, informative--wonderful!! ... And your playing was--well, drop-dead astonishing! ... Great job!  You represented yourself and the church like a rock star!!

Kansas City, MO

You did a TERRIFIC job tonight!!!! I did not want that concert to end! It was AWESOME!! Every piece you did had soul, character, and life. I have fallen in love with that Casavant!! You showed off so many different colors from principals to the flutes, strings and celestes, and the fiery reeds and especially the brilliant hooded grand chouer trompette harmonique! Thank you for a great night of entertainment!!!!!

Kansas City, MO

Feedback for the Jan Kraybill Concert, 2013-01-16. I really enjoyed every piece. Thank you for such an excellent selection. ... My understanding of works for the organ is rather limited, so the Widor Toccata and the Jongen Sonata were new, and I loved them both. Of all the pieces you played tonight, I must say that Widor Toccata was my favorite for its very emotionally powerful ending. I always marvel at the tremendous energy that comes from the being of an organist, seated in the cockpit, hands on the controls, lifting us off as if in a Boeing 747, and landing us safely at the end of a journey. Thanks for being such a great pilot. I'm looking forward to my next flight with you at the wheel.

Kansas City, MO

All I can say is Jan Kraybill was astounding! It was simply fabulous!

Kansas City, MO

Your recital was a real triumph, and the audience was with you all the way.

Kansas City, MO

I was in the audience last night and very much enjoyed the solo you played as well as what you and the organ added to the orchestra when you played along with them.

Independence, MO

Your touch on the instrument with your deep passion for the music speaks to me deeply and has much meaning.

Kansas City, MO

Wow!  We are so fortunate to have you in our midst!  So much talent -- accomplishment -- brilliance -- generosity -- kindness -- AND just enough naughtiness to make you irresistible (musically and personally).

Independence, MO

Amazing, fantastic, marvelous -- just a few superlative adjective describing your "Second Acts" Super Bowl Sunday recital.  Everyone was thrilled with your performance on the Casavant organ.  We so enjoy your interesting and unknown (to me) selections for your concerts.  Your comments in introducing the pieces are so informative and expressed so well that we all understand the composer's desire ...

Independence, MO

Thank you for a thoroughly delightful Super Bowl recital.  The standing ovation was well deserved, both for your musicianship and your delightful "person-ship."  You are always warm and gracious.  I am somewhat reserved when it comes to standing, but I had no hesitation in joining wholeheartedly with the rest of the audience in saying, "Brava, well done!"

Independence, MO

Congratulations on a FANTASTIC recital.  I have never heard the [Liszt] B-A-C-H played better!  What a wonderful accomplishment.  It is a great privilege to know such a fine musician who is so gracious.  I brought a student to their first organ recital and she loved it!

Independence, MO

This is an incredible opportunity to not only hear a wonderful pipe organ, but to hear it used in a way that is second to none by Jan Kraybill. My father who had never been to an organ concert 5 years ago now will not miss Jan on Super Bowl Sunday. Please bring your children, parents, and grand parents to this annual event. There is no age range that will not enjoy this one hour performance.

Kansas City, MO

The concert was thrilling, thanks to a master artist and interpreter of this magnificent instrument!

audience member at regional convention recital

I cannot begin to tell you what an absolutely WONDERFUL convention we had in Des Moines. ... AND -- your concert was so outstanding!!

audience member at regional convention recital - Des Moines, IA

Thanks so much for all that you do for AGO, organists, and the profession!  I knew that you were very active in the guild, but received a much fuller understanding of your tremendous work at the Des Moines convention.  Your enthusiasm and joy are contagious, and are certainly reflected in your demeanor with others as well as in your playing!  Your concert at St. Paul’s was truly a highlight of the convention—musically and excitingly performed, and your commentary about the music and the concert drew the audience even closer to you and to the wonderful music being heard!

audience member at regional convention recital - Des Moines, IA

Congratulations again to you too for your terrific concert.  It was a very different program for you, but also a big winner!  I really appreciate the dialogue you provide between pieces; too many artists don’t do that anymore, and it’s a great bonus to hear what you have to say on a personal note about the pieces.

audience member at regional convention recital - Des Moines, IA

I not only love hearing you play, but it's always so nice to talk with you, too. Your concert was really great and I wanted to thank you again for playing the encore for a few of us afterwards (I'm so sorry someone made you do that after an amazing concert and reception!!). Your energy and musicianship is inspiring.

audience member at regional convention recital - Des Moines, IA

And that was certainly a magnificient recital in Des Moines!  And the thread to link it to events in Des Moines past was really neat.  A wonderful presentation!  Congratulations!

Congratulations on your performance tonight, Jan!!! You are such a gift to us all :)

Jan is an entertaining speaker and a wonderful artist.

convention recital audience member on anonymous survey - Des Moines, IA

This is the third time I have heard Jan play and she just gets better and better.  It was obvious she had put a lot of thought and research into finding interesting music.

convention recital audience member on anonymous survey - Des Moines, IA

The most exciting recital I have heard in years!   Unique program and interestingly presented.

convention recital audience member on anonymous survey - Des Moines, IA

An excellent program in all aspects.  Interesting repertoire, excellent skill, informative and friendly commentary useful to all in attendance, visibility with the monitors was excellent.  Among the finest of recitals I've ever attended at an AGO convention (and I've been to a dozen of them).

convention recital audience member on anonymous survey - Des Moines, IA

One of the best events of the whole week. Jan is so personable and a true cheerleader for the pipe organ and AGO.

convention recital audience member on anonymous survey - Des Moines, IA

I found her comments very helpful in my listening.

convention recital audience member on anonymous survey - Des Moines, IA

Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous! Such research!!! And you make it all look EASY when we know in fact it is the result of dedication, discipline, long hours of hard work, and an incredible gift for learning and performing great music.

convention recital audience member on anonymous survey - Des Moines, IA

Very carefully planned and well executed program.  The concept of using the various anniversaries was timely and interesting.  Her comments added a lot to the program, especially for the non-organists.

convention recital audience member on anonymous survey - Des Moines, IA

Her exuberance and energy were palpable.  And she played wonderfully, as well!

convention recital audience member on anonymous survey - Des Moines, IA

I never cease to marvel at Jan's playing AND programming -- what an interesting choice of repertoire, all played SO well.

audience member - Independence, MO

Your concert was another memorable experience for all of us.  You played the dickens out of the organ!  When the camera focused on you, there was either deep intensity of focus or a big grin for us to enjoy, for you were having such fun playing.  Thank you for causing us to revel in the music ... we experienced great pride, admiration and thanksgiving for being a part of your audience.  You were stellar.

audience member

You were the best athlete I saw all day . . . and I watched virtually every minute of the Superbowl!!!

audience member

Bravo!  It was just the most amazing concert.  My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  Many thanks for the invitation.  We will look forward to attending another concert in the future – especially when you play at the Kauffman Center!

audience member

You played a really wonderful recital – your technique and interpretation were energizing and we the listeners were engaged from beginning to end, in each piece. You clearly have a fan club, and I am a member, too!

audience member

She is one of the outstanding musicians in the entire region.  She impressed us all when last year she passed the highest level of performance certification from the American Guild of Organists, with her Fellowship Certification.  Her programs are fabulous.

audience member - Independence, MO

I really wanted to thank u for an Incredibly inspiring an impactful evening. It was one thing to be blown away by such a wonderful place but the performance was even  more amazing. U helped bring back the feeling of Xmas in my heart:). For that I am grateful. Also a big thanks for the private tour. That was the coolest experience. Your passion for what u do was contagious!

audience member - Independence, MO

As if being enveloped in that magnificent space, singing and enjoying the company of everyone occupying our half of the pew wasn’t gift enough, a tour inside the organ and getting to request my own private Bach?!  I wasn’t kidding when I said it was more than an OMG moment.

audience member

I just want to thank you for your beautiful Handel concerto with the KC orchestra. It was so beautiful and as usual, you just make the music "come to life"!!   You always bring excitement to whatever you play and make it come alive!!

I brought my neighbor, who likes to come with me to hear you and has also become a "Jan fan"!!    She says to tell you how much she enjoyed your music and she agrees with me about how you add such a personal touch to all your music.

It sounded like it must have been technically very challenging - I can only imagine.

Pipedreams broadcast audience member

Since hearing the Pipedreams radio broadcast featuring you on the Auditorium organ a couple weeks back, I wanted to send you a quick note. What a thoroughly delightful program!! Your playing ... was superb, and your clear and creative registration and handling of the organ is very compelling. It was also very good to hear your well-articulated story about your path to your current position -- I'm sure, a great inspiration to those who aspire towards a goal. Surely, John Obetz left some large Organmasters to fill, but you clearly have things well in hand, and they are certainly fortunate to have you on staff.

Again, bravo, and thanks for your fine music, and for all of your good work for the AGO.

audience member

Thank you for a wonderful afternoon of music on Sunday.  Your passion (and even athleticism) in performance makes our experience as listeners an extraordinary event each time you play.

audience member

Thank you so much, Jan, for your concert on Sunday at the Cathedral.  I enjoyed absolutely everything and left so inspired in having heard a fabulous program, a beautiful organ, and an organist second to none.  As I said before, you do not have to take second place to anyone I heard in Washington.  This was one of the best concerts I have ever heard with new music (to me) that want to hear again.  You are an inspiration!

audience member

Thanks for a fabulous concert on Sunday afternoon!!!!   You really outdid yourself.  ...  The Jongen was incredible - it seemed that you were in an ecstatic state.

audience member

The organ concert was absolutely wonderful. I love Jan Kraybill for her musical insights and her prowess in commanding a technically demanding musical instrument. Every organ is unique, and with just 4 days' preparation, she was able to show us the great variety of sounds the Rufatti organ at Immaculate Conception has to offer.  She played a wide variety of composers--Bach, Buxtehude, Franck, Dupre, Bolcom (an amazing gospel style setting of "Amazing Grace") and Jongen, and with each one she found appropriate sounds for the style of that composer and period.

audience member

Your concerts are fun! I really enjoy the way you relate to the audience and give them clues of what to listen for. There were four women in my row for whom this was the first organ concert and they were very attentive and involved.

audience member

Thank you for the marvelous program last Sunday. I brought my organ student ... she was very inspired by your playing ... the screen was great for her to see your pedal technique. ... A quality of your playing that is outstanding is your ability to bring out the phrasing and accents. Even in the most rapid passages (such as occur in the Vierne sketches) the effect is always clean and bouyant.

Audience member

Just returned from Jan Kraybill's spectacular Super-Bowl Sunday Organ Recital. The lady is all fingers and feet, riotous rhythms, scintilating sounds, and glorious fanfares! Listening and watching doesn't catch it all . . . but IT'S there bigger than life ... floating around and in you. "WOW!" is too cheap an accolade,... but it will just have to do.

audience member

I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your Super Bowl concert. For the last two years in a row, your concerts have come at a time in my life when I needed a bit of a lift, and each time you've given me one. It was so great to leave my worries behind for a couple of hours and just enjoy some wonderful music in a friendly atmosphere.

audience member

Very lovely recital Sunday, Jan, very very nice. Thank you so much for playing for us...fabulous!

audience member

If you've never heard--or SEEN--Jan play, you've truly missed a remarkable experience. Try to make [her concerts], if it's at all possible for you to do so. I guarantee that you won't regret the effort!

audience member

My twelve year old son continues to catch me off guard with the statements he comes out with. While talking with [my wife] about possibly going to Jan Kraybill's super bowl organ recital next weekend, [my son] interrupted in disgust. "What are you two talking about?! Of course we're going to that! She's awesome! At least I'm going."

We wanted to let you know that we thoroughly enjoyed the recital Friday!  What a great occasion [50th anniversary of Community of Christ's Aeolian-Skinner Auditorium organ], and what a superb performance! ... You displayed the craftsmanship of the Bach piece while injecting tonal variety and nuance, something not always accomplished.  The Dupre' was fascinating, and on the Reubke, you made us forget about pipes and technique and allowed the music to speak directly to us, as it should.  And, what an encore to end it all with!  As always, your remarks were gracious and perfectly chosen.

... after the exhilarating evening at your concert Monday at the Church of the Incarnation in Dallas. May your so obvious God-given inspiration continue to challenge all of us to risk sharing our own gifts with such joy!

Jan Kraybill's concert was by far the best organ event we have had in Jacksonville. She is not only a great organist, but what a musician!

I JUST PURCHASED YOUR CD AFTER ATTENDING YOUR PERFORMANCE IN JACKSONVILLE AT JACOBY HALL. MY HUSBAND AND I BOTH AGREED IT WAS THE BEST ORGAN RECITAL WE HAVE HEARD AND WANTED TO THANK YOU FOR COMING TO JACKSONVILLE TO SHARE YOUR TALENT. AM SURE WE WILL ENJOY THE ALBUM. THANKS AGAIN.

Enjoyed your concert so much yesterday. I brought my neighbor who is not an organist and she enjoyed it as well. You really have a way of making the organ "talk" and "come alive". One of my friends who was there yesterday said he normally doesn't care for Bach but your first number was his favorite. I believe you do something with Bach's music that makes it so special.

We had a wonderful time at yesterday's concert! Thank you for wonderful planning - and wonderful playing. You help me believe that there is a future for this fabulous instrument.

It was great to have the chance to see and hear you yesterday. You were nothing less than a knockout! An appealing program, wonderfully played, and of course a fine instrument and space. ... you had the audience "eating out of your hand" from your first comments and your first number. I hope you realize how much your interesting and helpful commentary adds to your overall appeal (and I am amazed at how you can pull that off so well, especially in between such challenging numbers). You speak as well as you play, and the audience loves it all!

I enjoyed the organ arrangements in the prelude and the hymn introductions. The Bach at the end was also great. ... Your hymn story on Nun danket was fascinating ... Anyway, thanks again for working up the program and making the Wicks sound great!

I attended your recital at Wayzata during the convention and enjoyed it very much- especially your Sei Gegruesset variations- electrifying!

We just want to thank you again for the weekend in Ann Arbor. The workshop on worship was informative and helpful. ... Your example on mentoring was memorable. Later that evening, it was exciting to see you mentor one of our young friends in just the same way that you had demonstrated. Your concert was amazing. It is easy to take for granted that with your talent and dedication we will hear beautiful music, but it would be unfair to not give you the credit for the hard work that is involved. We are blessed that you continue to share your passion with us. The Hymnfest on Sunday was inspired. It was apparent that the congregation was moved by the experience.

If you have never been under her ministry try it. She had us doing some really fun things and then she would have us connected to the power source in some very powerful ways. Singing songs from all over the world with women who can sing was one of the great joys of the weekend.

I wanted to thank you again for coming to Lincoln and giving your recital at St. Paul. Your recital was one of the best that I have heard this year :) I hope that I will get to hear you play again sometime.

I attended your workshop last Saturday and your concert which was awesome!

But what I truly appreciated was your skill and sensitivity in accompanying the choir's music. At no time did the organ overpower the singers, and you managed to show its versatility of sound and effect as an accompanying instrument. The AGO is very fortunate to have you as an advocate and leader.

You were superb. ...  Thank you for your stewardship of an incredible talent as an organist.

I again, want to express my appreciation and thanks for the wonderful gift you gave our community. I especially appreciated the educational component you provided. The context you provided was very helpful in listening to each work. ... You must love going to work every day, knowing you can access two of the finest organs in the country.

The game [Super Bowl] was good, but the organ concert was better! After watching the physical prowess of left hand over right, smooth and rapid footwork, fingers moving at speed of light, and on and on, I don't know why you would ever have to go to a gymnasium.

Elegant posture.  Sure walk, not a strut.  Glamorous appearance.  Warm, instantaneous connection with audience.  Interesting spoken intros.  Musical variety.  Played the spots off the pages with passion and intensity.  Whee!  What a Super Bowl Sunday concert V!!!

What a remarkable evening... cannot remember being so enthused, inspired and overwhelmed by the magnificent music and your wonderful narrative!

I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your Super Bowl Sunday concert.  Adagio for Strings is one of my favorite pieces for strings and I thoroughly enjoyed soaking it up as you played.  The Mephisto Waltz was incredible!  Not only the ability to transcribe it but to play Liszt too!  Thanks again for your contagious joy as you perform.

I want to express to you how much we enjoyed your Super Bowl Sunday recital.  In fact, it was the bright spot of the day.  WE appreciated the diversity of music and the wonderful registrations you selected for each piece.

Last night as you played I felt as if the composers were right there with me, experiencing their music with me, feeling the joy that you live and share through your gifts.  It had a profoundly healing effect on me.

What a grand day you gave us.  ...  After more years than I care to remember of hearing organ recitals, there are those who play faster and louder than all the rest, there are those who play musically well in between the wrong notes, and there are those few who have mastered the craft and art of their music, and you, dear person, are one of those.  Leo [Sowerby] would have been pleased.

The music sounds good -- but the person makes the difference.  The dedication, commitment, and talent are what make it special.  You always give the best of your best.

It was a real pleasure to see and hear you Saturday night with "The Enormous Orchestra" and (at long last!) organ/orchestra works that are all time favorites of mine.  Your registration selections and changes as well as effective use of the state trumpets were a delight.  I have heard organs all over the world (including the one given to the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1960).  The Auditorium instrument is still my favorite.

...

Again, my compliments for your enthusiastic work Saturday night.  I bought the Barber organ score many years ago and appreciate your handling of the many registration changes called for plus that extended pedal cadenza -- I believe every member of the orchestra had their eyes on you!!
